A plea from the race director, Megan:
The Silverton Double Dirty 30 is finally a reality, but only following three arduous years trying to obtain an event permit. This permit is very special, and needs to be treated as such. I will be working very hard to create a one of a kind trail ultramarathon that serves the community in a lasting way.
The community of trail ultrarunners is a very special, select group of driven, conscientious, supportive, and GENEROUS people. Every year this group collectively completes countless hours of volunteer work, raises funds for worthy causes, and makes so many running events go smoothly. This inspires me to aim for new heights; therefor I raise the question: “What else is POSSIBLE?”
For four years I dreamt of running Hardrock, and in 2012 I finally got my chance. I found out just three weeks before the race that I’d moved off the wait list. Both excited and NERVOUS, I spent my weekends pre-race doing three of the passes on the course which left me feeling spent and wondering how it would be remotely possible to climb all nine mountain passes of Hardrock in one go.
I decided then and there to make my Hardrock attempt about something bigger than just my personal desire to complete the race. I sent letters to friends and family asking them to support my journey to Hardrock by making a donation to Big Brothers Big Sisters of Southwest Colorado. In just two weeks, we raised $2,500.
Two people said they would donate only if I reached my goal of finishing under 40 hours. Boy did this turn out to be a powerful bargain! During the race, when the going got tough, all I could think about was the kids I was running for and it helped me push through. I even dropped my pacer coming into the last aid station to make sure I crossed that line under 40 hours! As a result, an extra $1000 was raised!
Now it’s up to you.
The Silverton Double Dirty 30 offers one of the most scenic mountain adventures, demanding self-reliance, tenacity, and inner-strength for each runner to navigate through this 84% single track, single loop, one of a kind course. This race will prove to be one of the most amazing experiences of your life with the added benefit of raising funds for a big impact organization.
Having been a “Big Sister” I can speak firsthand to the value mentoring relationships are for children. The Dirty 30 mission is to strengthen the courage, confidence and leadership skills of kids. Big Brothers Big Sisters of SW CO pairs little kids up with caring and supportive adults to meet these same goals. By racing in the Double Dirty 30 you have the opportunity to take on the challenge of racing for kids who reap the benefits of having a mentor in their lives.
I challenge each of you to join in on this Silverton Double Dirty 30 fundraising effort. By taking on this challenge, you will be inspired to race your best, feel empowered, and push your limits for a worthy cause.
